CODE RED! the Austin Animal center is having a space crisis and will euthanize for space.

THESE ARE THE DOGS AT RISK.

The City of Austin released a statement about the space crisis at the  municipal Austin Animal Center, that stated “pur goal is to get as many medium/large dogs as possible into foster and adoptive homes in order to avoid issuing euthanasia notices" - Chief Animal Officer.

Here is the official city page for urgent placements.

We need your help. The homeless city dogs need your help.

how to help

foster

Fostering is a minimum 2 week commitment that is super valuable. Fostering allows dogs to get a break from the stressful shelter environment and collect home notes that help them get adopted.

How to foster:

  • Apply to become a foster through the city foster program. Fosters must be in or near Austin, Texas, contact animal.foster@austintexas.gov for questions.
  • Fill out the matchmaking form to get some suggestions on dogs that fit your life.
  • Contact us to ask questions, get support, and get recommendations from volunteers who spend lots of time with the dogs.

adopt

Finding a fit:

  • Browse the dogs available at Austin Animal Center.
  • Fill out our matchmaking form for volunteers to help find a fit.
  • Tip: check out the dogs in foster as well to get the benefits of helping a dog in need that has been practicing their home skills (like Tajin!)! Adopting these dogs will open the foster homes up to help another dog.

What to do next:

  • Stop by to meet them any day during opening hours (11am-7pm).
  • If you have another dog, schedule a meet & greet by emailing the behavior team at animal.Behavior@austintexas.gov.
  • If a dog is a fit, you can adopt a dog right away OR start by fostering them (see above).
  • Contact us volunteers to learn more about the dogs on your short list and meet the dog with their shelter friends who know them.
